FOLLET René

René FOLLET has made illustrations for several magazines since he was fourteen. From 1949, he created illustrations for Spirou under the pseudonym Ref, followed by his first comics in the series 'Les Belles Histoires de l'Oncle Paul'. He joined Tintin in 1953, doing the western 'Rocky Bill' scripted by Yves Duval. His comics work was put on hold afterwards, and Follet continued his illustration career at publishers such as Dupuis, Casterman, Lefrancq and the Dutch magazine Pep.

It wasn't until 1968 before he returned to comics, with 'S.O.S. Bagarreur' with a script by Maurice Tillieux in Spirou. He also created 'Les Zingari' with scripts by Yvan Delporte in Le Journal de Mickey. At the same time, René Follet assisted MiTacq on 'Jacques le Gall' and 'Stany Derval', and William Vance on 'Bob Morane' and 'Bruno Brazil'. In 1972, he created 'Yvan Zourine' with writer Jacques Stoquart in Tintin, and this series was later continued in Spirou and the Dutch magazine Eppo. Also for Eppo, he created nine adventures of 'Steve Severin'.

Follet revived Jijé's 'Jean Valhardi' character with two stories written by André-Paul Duchateau or Jacques Stoquart. He adapted 'L'Iliade' to comics with Stoquart in 1982, before he took on a comic adaptation of John Flander's 'Edmund Bell' in 1986. Six years later, he cooperated with Loup Durand on the series 'Daddy'.

He drew 'Les Ailes de Peter Pan' with scripts by Rivière and Balibar and started the 'Ikar' series with writer Makyo. In 2002, he started the series 'Terreur', about the life of Marie Tussaud, with Duchateau. René Follet stands out for his painted comic style, what can also be seen in the album 'Shelena', which he made with Jéromine Pasteur for Casterman in 2004. (Source: Lambiek)
