Luc Collin was born in Kamina in Belgian Congo. Collin, who signs with the pseudonym Batem, started his career in the studio of colorist Vittorio Leonardo and also at SEPP, a subsidiary company of Dupuis, engaged with the liscensing of comic characters. He cooperated on several merchandising projects involving Shoe, the Snorky and the Marsupilami. In 1987 André Franquin asked him to do the artwork of the solo adventures of 'Le Marsupilami'. He has illustrated stories with Franquin's long tailed animal since, working together with Franquin himself and several scenarists, such as Greg, Yann, Fauche, Éric Adam and Dugomier.
In addition to 'Le Marsupilami', Batem has produced political caricatures for newspapers. He was also present at the publishing house La Sirène, where he cooperated on 'Jack Sélère' with Christian Gaudin and Jean-Baptiste Gilou' in 1995.
